was a stomstorm and this what happen;
A tornado ripped through the town of Waikanae on the Kapiti Coast this afternoon.
Locals say it was a terrifying few moments as the whirlwind tossed cars and trees about.
One man is understood to be injured after his van was blown over.
Inspector Paul Jermy said the tornado swept across the main highway just north of Waikanae about 4pm.
One member of the public told ONE News it looks like the tornado had taken out several cars and destroyed some buildings.
Some cars have smashed windshields and some have landed in a ditch.
They said there seems to be a visible tornado path which looks to have passed over State Highway One.
The fire service told ONE News several people were left trapped when a tree blew into a house. All have been freed however one person received minor injures.
Winds have also lifted the roof from a house and blown debris onto the highway, blocking traffic.
Emergency services attended a large number of callouts in the region.

The tornado came as 20 severe weather warnings were issued by Metservice throughout the country as a prolonged storm continues to lash New Zealand.
MetService detected severe thunderstorms offshore from Manawatu, moving south east towards Levin, Foxton and Waitarere.
They says further thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected in parts of the country tonight.
The wild weather will hit the West Coast tonight and tomorrow and in the North Island be experienced north of about Paraparaumu to Taranaki and near the Manawatu Gorge through to the Tararua District, spreading as far north as Waikato early tomorrow morning.
Some of the thunderstorms could be particularly severe north of Harihari in Westland through to daybreak tomorrow, with wind gusts of more than 110 kilometres an hour.
More hail is likely, with stones to the size of marbles.
Small hail could accumulate on some roads overnight, making conditions icy.
Woman knocked down
A Kapiti Coast woman has been taken to hospital after reportedly being knocked over by the wild weather.
Local Kapiti resident Laurie Petherick was out taking photographs of the storm and mini waterspouts, when he saw his elderly neighbour all of a sudden knocked to the ground.
He says she was knocked out and there was a pool of blood around her head, but came to smiling, not knowing where she was.
She has been taken to Wellington Hospital.

Polar bears have adapted to their [[file:///C:/Documents and Settings/blenderHat/My Documents/My Webs/myweb7/polar_bear_habitat.htm|habitat]]. They have short claws, and their claws are very solid. These claws are best suited for walking on the ice and snow as well as the shore of the Arctic region. Polar bears teeth are sharp and jagged, great for breaking apart the meat of seals. Their canines are long and very sharp, so that they can pull apart their food. Polar bears have small and stubby tails and ears. Polar bears live in the cold, icy north, and therefore, with small body parts, they reduce the risk of heat loss.
Another key description of the polar bear, is that they have huge feet. Polar bears need big feet to help them survive in the Arctic. They use their feet like paddles in the water when they are swimming. Polar bear feed can also act like snowshoes, when they are walking across the snow. Polar bears are a massive animal; they need the big feet, to spread on the snow to support their weight. Polar bears can walk on snow that a human would normally break through. On the pads of a polar bears paw are tiny grippers. These grippers are tiny growths called papillae. Papillae increase the friction on the snow and ice making it easier for the polar bear to walk.

polar region.
The pollutants that arrive, unwelcome in the north can have harmful effects on the polar bears. They come by air, precipitation, and by the ocean. One of the most harmful types of these chemicals are persistent organic pollutants (POP). Theses persistent organic pollutants do not go away. They accumulate in the food chain. If they start in a small animal say a small fish, then a bigger fish eats the smaller one. The bigger fish not only gets the nutrients and vitamins from the smaller fish, it also gets the POP chemicals. Then when that fish is eaten the chemicals do not go away. Instead, the chemical compound and remain in the food chain. By the time the persistent organic chemicals work their way up to the top, to the polar bear, the concentration of them is so large that the toxic components in them are no match of the the large and strong polar bear.
These chemicals not only have adverse affect on adult polar bears, but some cases have been found where young, baby polar bears are being born with both male and female sex organs. This may be a result of the adult polar bear's immune system beginning to fail.
